Fresno’s plan to rename a 10-mile stretch of road after César Chávez has run up against opposition from Fresno County supervisors. On a 5-0 vote Tuesday, the supervisors opposed the renaming of the parts of the route that are outside Fresno’s city limits — four segments totaling about 1½ miles. The county resolution, which alleged a lack of transparency by city leaders, resolved to “maintain the names of California Avenue and Kings Canyon Road within the county islands” and to “discourage the Fresno City Council from proceeding with its plan without full and thorough consideration and consultation of their affected residents.”The city council approved the César Chávez Boulevard plan on March 9 and said $1 million would be set aside to cover the renaming costs and compensate businesses affected by the change. The route to be named after the civil rights and labor leader currently goes under the names California Avenue, Ventura Street and Kings ...Danville’s Jake Haener on verge of reaching NFL QB dream — just don’t mention Brock Purdy

SANTA CLARA — The first memory Craig Bergman has of Jake Haener was when Monte Vista High was finishing up football practice, with the local youth league taking the field.“They’d be coming on to start when we were done,” Bergman said in a recent phone interview. “He’d always say, ‘Coach! Watch me throw!’ and I’d watch this little tiny guy, a sixth or seventh grader. And man, he could throw it even back then.”It’s not a stretch to suggest that the “little tiny guy,” at 6-foot and 208 pounds, is still regarded that way in NFL circles and has been striving to prove himself ever since.Haener, a Fresno State product, believes he’ll be selected between the third and fifth rounds of the NFL Draft, which begins in two weeks. He offered the following observations regarding his supposed limitations during a media scrum Wednesday after his practice at the 49ers’ local pro day:— “I’ve been fighting the naysayers, the doubters, fo...Arrest made in San Francisco slaying of tech CEO Bob Lee: Reports

A border is a strange thing. An imaginary line in the ground divides nations, and people have died to defend it or sometimes simply to cross it.The arbitrary nature of that border is a central feature of “A Distinct Society,” the play by Kareem Fahmy that TheatreWorks Silicon Valley is now premiering at Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts. The play is set in the Haskell Free Library and Opera House, a real building that straddles the border of the United States and Canada, part of the library in Vermont and part of it in Quebec. During the Trump Administration’s infamous Muslim Ban, some people from nations whose citizens were forbidden to travel to the United States were able to at least visit with U.S.-based relatives inside the library.“A Distinct Society” depicts just such a family in just such a situation. A new business model for breaking down environmental movements was being hatched in real time. On Labor Day weekend in 2016, private security dogs in North Dakota attacked pipeline opponents led by members of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe as they approached earth-moving equipment. The tribal members considered the land sacred, and the heavy equipment was breaking ground to build the Dakota Access pipeline. With a major public relations crisis on its hands, the pipeline’s parent company, Energy Transfer, hired the firm TigerSwan to revamp its security strategy.By October, TigerSwan — founded by James Reese, a retired commander of the elite special operations Army unit Delta Force — had established a military-style pipeline security strategy. There was one nagging problem that threatened to unravel it all: Reese hadn’t acquired a security license from the North Dakota Private Investigation and Security Board.
